Kate Wootton, MA Clay Therapist, & Clay Therapy & Conversations Supervisor, has been working with children, adolescents, parents, professionals in the field of Education all her professional life, firstly working as secondary specialist PE teacher before moving into education management within a local education authority. She also worked for a short time as a youth worker. Kate returned to working specifically with students and their parents managing the education and supporting the reintegration of pupils who were out of school due to medical illness. During this time, she trained as an integrative child and adolescent psychotherapeutic counsellor, working with the creative arts and has since been working as a school counsellor with adolescents between the ages of 11 and 18.
Kate frequently uses image creation in her work with adolescents to support the expression of feelings and to work through the increasingly complex lives they are having to navigate. However, since training as a clay therapist under Lynne’s tutelage, Kate is continually amazed and humbled by the power of clay to illicit conversations with young people, and indeed adults, which lead to a deeper understanding of their world and relationships. Having successfully used clay with differing groups as team-building activities to support interaction Kate enjoys developing different ideas for clay use to support well-being. She has spearheaded the production of ‘Unearthed’, the Clay Therapy Community newsletter, of which she is the editor.
When touching clay, Kate feels she becomes connected to the earth, the natural world, in a way that enlivens her soul. During the pandemic, creating with clay for personal well-being, helped to restore balance and she continues to restore her energy and creative capacity using clay. If Kate had to choose one creative material for versatility, fun, engagement, it would be clay, she says.
